Delve into the world of djembe rhythms that grow your confidence
Embarking on a musical journey learning the West African djembe drum can help expand our rhythmical creativity and guide us into a world of personal discovery for self-expression.
Learning to play djembe drum rhythms can help us feel grounded, immerse us in rhythm, improve coordination, plus it’s a powerful stress-reliever. There’s just so many benefits of learning to play the djembe.
The djembe is such a wonderful versatile drum, it can be brought into all kinds of drum circle situations to suit any occasion. I bring a variety of djembe sizes from 8 inch to 16 inch to enhance and showcase dialog between drum circle participants with my Brisbane wellbeing programs, therapeutic community drumming programs, women’s circles and team building activities.
Let's get those triplet djembe rhythms grooving
One of my favourite rhythmical patterns is triplets. When I compose music for classroom percussion, I tend to lean towards the triplet feel. There’s so much rhythmical fun we can have learning triplet rhythms on the djembe drum.
This video from my Positive Music collection includes module 2 from my Red River Gum classroom percussion music online mini course. I wanted to share this with you to help develop your musical skills.
I feel, the more people playing and exploring rhythmical music for wellness, the more we connect in creative ways and view the world and ourself with more compassion.
So if you’re a beginner drummer wanting to learn essential rhythms to help boost your rhythmical confidence and start creating your own rhythms, this video can help you on your rhythmical journey exploring triplet patterns.
As you can see, watching the video it is aimed for the beginner drummer in mind. I take each rhythm slowly as I would be teaching a beginner African djembe drumming class. During the video, each rhythm has musical notation written underneath to help those who can read music.
I have a had many classroom teachers and music educators download River Red Gum sheet music and play along tracks for their classroom students. It’s a great way to introduce children to rhythmic music making, with a twist of rhythmical challenge. In my teacher trainings, people learn play rhythms that create percussion ensemble music and then we explore improvisation and delve deeper into creativity.
I remember when I was teaching a lot of drumming classes for kids, they LOVED triplet djembe rhythms. I would also give them low pitch drum parts on the African dundun and sangban drums that support the djembe rhythms. The students really excelled as a percussion ensemble, making lots of new friends, having lots of fun. The result of this was their confidence bloomed as their musical achievement grew.
As a percussion teacher for over 35 years it always wonderful seeing students and classroom teacher’s progress each week during the drumming program.
