A Rhythmic Journey for Self Empowerment
In this fast-paced and unpredictive world we live in, finding moments of tranquillity, calm and peace is essential for maintaining mental wellbeing. One incredibly effective way to achieve this is through a successful creative drumming meditation practice.
As I have mentioned on Positive Music blog before, I only share and teach what I have experienced, whether through my personal life, meditation practice or professional development from facilitator trainings, trauma informed and evidence based rhythmic drumming trainings and personal coaching.
To be honest, I don’t believe I ever stop learning about myself and how I can improve my wellbeing, whether physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. They all go hand in hand… yes?
Just recently my family and I moved interstate to continue to serve our community. Well it certainly has been one huge learning curve to say the least. Many moments of unpredictability and things that are completely out of my control, which has brought on stressful moments.
Though they say that we aren’t given challenges that we can’t handle. Pheew
I’m not going to bore you with all the details, but I will share with you the importance of having a regular practice of music as medicine.
At the moment all my pro audio gear, flutes and handmade djembe drums and Ghanian drums are in another state which means I haven’t been able to play or listen to music. (happy to say, now have a little wireless radio… yippee).
So I had to delve deep into my archives to provide a video for you this week.
Creativity is just like oxygen. Vibrations that inspire joy, and upliftment. Embracing creativity whether through music, dance, visual arts in times of life stressful moments can help manage our emotions. Drumming is a form of meditation and meditation can bring us back to our inner sanctuary to our essence of beauty.
The longer we experience stress without release of creativity the more our body is filled with the hormone cortisol.
Science behind drumming and mindfulness
Clinical research shows group drumming can help alleviate those stress hormones, which I can give a big thumbs up. Drumming really works! (I’ve experienced the benefits of drumming for decades that’s why I love facilitating wellbeing drumming workshops).
The Science Behind Drumming and Mindfulness, studies have shown that rhythmic activities, such as drumming, have profound effects on the brain and body. Therapeutic drumming at home or with others stimulates the production of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals, promoting an overall sense of well-being.
Additionally, the synchronized movements involved in learning simple drumming rhythms can induce a meditative state, reducing stress and anxiety levels.
I am fortunate enough to have an occupation of playing music and facilitating community drumming and wellbeing programs for organisations.
This week I had been hired to facilitate a women’s drum circle in Maroochydore, Queensland. It was great getting back into the saddle again and a great reminder of the benefits of drumming together.
The drum circle has the ability to bring people together in creative ways, serves as a circuit breaker to let off some steam and helps participants feel supported through challenging times.
Therapeutic community drumming that is facilitated as a meditative tool, stands as a rhythmic bridge to mindfulness, providing a dynamic and engaging path to mental wellbeing. Through the primal language of beats, individuals can find solace, focus, and a sense of community.
A rhythmic journey of drumming for wellbeing
As we navigate the complexities of modern life, the rhythmic journey of therapeutic drumming offers a powerful and accessible tool for nurturing a peaceful and balanced mind, body and spirit.
When we combine the ancient practice of meditation with the rhythmic heartbeat of drums, this unique approach offers a powerful and engaging method for cultivating mindfulness and promoting mental health.
The repetitive nature of drumming at tempos from between 60 and 80 beats per minute (BPM) serves as a rhythmic gateway, guiding us away from the chaos of daily life and into a state of in rhythm and flow and focused presence.
Enhanced Focus and Concentration with Meditation in Rhythm. I wanted to help you through challenging times that can arise during the festive season. I revisited my student drumming resource. By incorporating drumming into your mindfulness practice can significantly enhance your ability to focus and concentrate.
The simple rhythmic patterns and healing music play-along in Meditation In Rhythms demand attention and presence, pulling the mind away from distractions. As you become attuned to the cadence of the drums, the constant stream of thoughts that often clouds the mind begins to dissipate, leaving behind a sense of clarity and heightened awareness.
Building Community and Connection
Drumming meditation is often practiced in groups, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. However, this can also be achieved at home from the very comfort of your creative space.
The collective rhythm that’s created by the group of individuals drumming together, creates a profound sense of unity. This shared journey not only enhances the meditative experience but also strengthens social bonds, promoting a supportive and connected community.
Getting Started with Drumming Meditation
Embarking on a drumming meditation journey requires minimal equipment – a drum or percussion instrument of your choice is all you need. Some of my students have also requested guidance along the way through my online coaching. Depending on what you need.
Whether you're a seasoned drummer or a complete novice, the key lies in embracing the process with an open heart and mind.
Here are my 3 tips for times of stress that can be implemented straight away, without any cost:
- Singing or sing along to your favourite music (you don’t need to be a singer)
- Move the body. Pop on some of your favourite music and allow your body to get lost within the music. Let go, have fun… be playful.
- Drum along to music that is created for healing purposes.
Over to you:
"What specific, measurable actions can you take this week to make progress toward your goal?"
"What adjustments can you make to your schedule to allocate more time to your priorities?" and finally "In what ways can you empower and support yourself to achieve your best?"
What’s holding you back from reaching your potential?
