Practice with a metronome
For any beginner and experienced drummer to truly master time, is to tune that inner clock that is within. Begin to feel the rhythm. Get the rhythm within the body. A great place to start for beginners is to incorporate a metronome into your practice routine.
Set the metronome to different tempos and play along with it, ensuring that your beats align with the click.
This disciplined approach will enhance your rhythmic precision and sharpen your internal sense of time. Start with simple rhythms at various tempos, this could also be a lovely way to introduce a drumming meditation practice too.
Play a simple djembe rhythm for about three minutes (no stopping), really imbibe the rhythm and sound of your djembe drum. As I have mentioned in my previous blog post be the observer of your playing and listen deeply to the sound you’re creating and tune into how it feels to the play drum.
Of course, all this without pausing or stopping.
Over time, you'll find yourself effortlessly syncing with various tempos, a crucial skill for any djembe player.
