Choosing a djembe
For beginners, choosing the perfect djembe drum can seem like a daunting task amidst the vast array of options available. However, fear not, for I'm here to guide you through this journey and help you make an informed decision.
When venturing into the world of djembe drums, it's essential to prioritize quality and craftsmanship. We want to set ourself up for success as much as possible and choosing a djembe that is well crafted from high-quality materials such as sustainably sourced wood and authentic goat skin heads, helps encourage our playing.
These elements not only ensure durability but also contribute to the rich, resonant tones that characterize the djembe's signature sound. This is to inspire our continuing practice and playing.
Additionally, consider the size and weight of the drum. For beginners, opting for a mid-sized drum with a diameter ranging from 12 to 13 inches is ideal. This size strikes a balance between portability and playability, allowing you to comfortably explore various rhythms without feeling overwhelmed.
Furthermore, pay attention to the tuning system of the djembe. Traditional rope-tuned drums offer an authentic playing experience and allow for precise tuning adjustments, making them an excellent choice for beginners looking to hone their skills.
For those who have experienced trauma, I recommend a medium thick drumhead, tuned not too tight. High frequencies can be a trigger for some. So, stay away from the djembes that are cranked up (tuned tight) really high.
However, I’m also a huge fan of the recycled djembe drums with synthetic drumheads, they too make for some lovely first djembes. Check out Remo drum company that make a wide range of drum circle instruments.
As you embark on your djembe journey, consider the transformative power of rhythmic education. Enrolling in a comprehensive online course can provide you with the guidance, structure, and support needed to accelerate your learning process.

Producing the djembe sounds
As a beginner drummer, drum circle facilitator, or therapist, delving into the energising rhythms played on the djembe can be a transformative experience.
At first glance, the djembe drum may seem like a simple instrument, but its rich history and complex musical textures offer endless possibilities of fun exploration. Whether you're drawn to its primal rhythms or its ability to empower community and connection, learning the djembe sounds takes time to master.
Like any musical instrument starting with the fundamentals is essential.
Producing consistent quality sounds on the djembe is a blend of technique, patience, and ear training. Begin by mastering the basic sounds: the bass, tone, and slap.
- The bass, produced by striking the center of the drum with an open hand, provides a deep, resonant sound.
- The tone, achieved by striking the drum near the edge with slightly cupped hands, delivers a clear, melodic note.
- Finally, the slap, executed by snapping the fingers against the drum's edge, adds a crisp, percussive accent.
As you progress, experiment with combining the three basic tones and explore different rhythms. With dedication and perseverance, you'll soon find yourself effortlessly weaving intricate patterns and unleashing your creativity on the djembe.
Develop timing, groove and listening skills
Timing is the heartbeat of music… timing is how we measure rhythm and rhythm is everywhere. We see it in our walk, communication – listening and responding, the flow and chaos of in rhythm and completely out of rhythm.
For beginner djembe drummers, developing a strong sense of rhythm is key to unlocking our full potential to connect with our self and with others. Here are some essential tips to help you hone your timing skills and become a rhythmic powerhouse on the djembe.
First and foremost, practice with a metronome or drumming app to solidify your internal sense of timing. Start by playing simple rhythms at a slow tempo, gradually increasing the speed as you become more comfortable.
Focus on playing in sync with drumming play-along music, or jamming with friends or joining a drum circle. Listening and adapting to the rhythm of others will help you develop a keen sense of timing and improve your ability to stay in sync with the group.
Experiment with different time signatures such as 4/4 (common time) and 6/8 and 12/8 rhythms to expand your musical vocabulary and challenge your timing abilities. Don't be afraid to make mistakes – learning to recover from timing errors is an essential skill for any drummer.
Lastly, be patient and persistent in your practice. Developing solid timing takes time and dedication, but with regular practice and a positive mindset, you'll soon find yourself grooving effortlessly on the djembe.
Applications
While traditionally associated with West African music and ceremonies, the djembe has also carved out a niche in contemporary music and therapeutic practices. Let's explore some of the diverse applications for this beautiful instrument.
The dynamic range and expressive capabilities make the djembe drum a favourite among percussionists and drummers looking to add an exotic flair to their compositions.
Beyond the musical stage, the djembe finds its place in therapeutic settings, where its rhythmic vibrations are used to promote relaxation, stress relief, self-expression and emotional healing.
Drum circles, guided by trained facilitators, provide a safe and inclusive space for participants to connect, express themselves, and find solace in the communal beat of the drum.
Additionally, the djembe's portability and accessibility make it an ideal instrument for educational purposes, with many schools and community programs incorporating drumming workshops to foster creativity, teamwork, and cultural awareness among students of all ages.
Whether you're 10 or 110 years of age wanting to learn a musical instrument for fun, a therapy practitioner, group facilitator or an educator, the djembe offers endless opportunities for exploration, expression, and connection. So, pick up your drum and share your rhythmic energy.
