Sonic rhythmical prayer
What if we viewed our drum as a sound healing instrument? How could this enhance our approach to playing the drum?
Every musical instrument has its own frequency and when we deepen our connection, in this case with our favourite drum, we develop a close relationship between the instrument and us as players.
Especially those drums, whether an African djembe, kpalago, frame drum, conga, talking drum, and many other drums that have been hand made from an instrument maker, we imbibe the drums personality, the sound tone, the texture, the decoration, shape and of course frequency. The drum becomes our personal sound healing instrument that allows us to share our unique voice, express our personal feelings.
Our drum becomes a powerful tool for personal transformation. Of course, what and how we play comes down to intention. Learning simple rhythms alongside with a drumming routine can help us attune our attention to the positivity’s that lay within us. Such as our virtues of joy, creativity, resilience, compassion, lightness.
Every thought we create and every rhythm we play has a frequency.
For many centuries and in many cultures the drum has been played for rhythmical prayers, a way of communication to a higher source, a spiritual connection with our self and the supreme. Our intention becomes a huge part of sound healing.
Talking drum a sonic prayer for connection
I have many universal drums in my drum circle collection that I also share and teach for Positive Music teacher trainings in Australia. Today’s drum I feature the talking drum . Crafted from wood and stretched hide, the talking drum embodies the ingenuity of African craftsmanship. Its design allows for nuanced tones and pitches, enabling drummers to convey complex messages over long distances.
By varying the tension of the drum's strings and the force of their strikes, players can produce a wide range of sounds, mimicking the cadence and intonation of spoken language.
Beyond its practical use in communication, the talking drum holds deep cultural significance. It features prominently in ceremonies, rituals, and celebrations, serving as a conduit for storytelling, history, and tradition.
As part of my sonic prayer outback adventure on the Sunshine Coast, this week I thought I’d play my lovely talking drum. This drum has been a few places with me around Australia, such as Victora, Queensland and the beautiful Uluru – as you can see in the picture.
Today I’m sharing with you the lovely rhythm of 7 on the talking drum. A beautiful rhythm that creates positive energy, upliftment and joy. This rhythm can be played on all kinds of drums, so no need to have a talking drum. Whatever drum you have at home.
This week experiment with the 7 rhythm on your drum. See what you can come up with. Explore rhythm is an adventure and self discovery.
